Theme & Layout Change for Beginners
We all have to begin the learning process somewhere. Don't feel bad about it because it took me a while to learn it too. I make mostly Flexible Squares layouts so I'm going to teach you to switch from what you are currently using (say Smooth Sailing or some such) to Flexible Squares and put in a new layout!

I'm in no hurry. And if it ends up taking up too much time, don't even worry about it.

Hello um, I have a question. If you see my custom layout, there's the top and bottom bar in blue which is a remnant of the original flexible squares layout and I can't get it to go away ;; much like the purple top and bottom horizontal bars on your LJ. It's so ugly and frustrating, help!
jungdaedreamjungdaedream on June 22nd, 2013 10:08 pm (UTC)
Changed it to autumn flexible squares and retried so the bars are orange ; n ;

Hi! Thank you so much for the wonderful layouts. it's really really pretty and pleasing. I would just like to ask if it's possible to change the color of the italicized words. Mine has a dark red color and it contrasted with the black background, it's quite hard to read. Can I change it? If so, how? Thanks so much...
Jill aka Jo: TP: I'm Finishedsireesanwar on September 27th, 2013 06:43 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that it is at the beginning of the coding as

i { color: #??????; }

Where is this layout?

Hello there
I've tried to getting into making my Live Journal more lively a couple of times, but I have ended up giving up every time, I don't know why but I just can't seem to figure it out and I thought I was usually okay at this sort of stuff.

Using this I did get a little further but, when I try and customize the CSS, there is no text for the pre-made layout in the box, thus I cannot added changes to it, am I doing something wrong?

Re: Hello there
Here is my suggestion to you. Don't start from scratch. Take a layout (you can use one of mine) and start changing things. Make little changes, save it and then see what happens. Not only will you start learning things about the coding but you will have something to start with.

This is how I got into layouts. I used a friends layout coding and started adding, changing, and removing certain things. Eventually, I started to understand the things I was looking at. Also, I rarely start from scratch when making a layout.

I tend to find something close to the image in my head and build on it.

Does that help?

It doesn't say how to credit though :(
Jill aka Josireesanwar on February 4th, 2014 01:14 am (UTC)
You can put the below coding in your free text on your sidebar or in your profile.

Hi, I was hoping you could help me with a coloring issue I'm having. I was wondering if it was possible to change the color of the text "post comment" and "more options..." that you see when ever you type in the comment/reply box. I know you can change the background color of the boxes but I don't rly see a place in the code where I could change the text.
Jill aka Jo: Bones: Brennan squaresireesanwar on April 6th, 2014 05:40 am (UTC)
You're talking about the actual buttons like as I type this comment and I'm going to "post comment" or choose "more options" where it takes me to a screen that then gives me the ability to "preview" my comment?

I went to your journal and it appears there is coding for this under "input".

I think this is what you are referring too but if not let me know.

Hi thanks so much for your wonderful page but could you help me?
Hi, I adore your page its wonderful and I love your layouts! But I have changed my theme to the one you said and pressed no on all boxes but there is no coding the box at all, it is just blank? And I tried adding a header image to the blank space and my page went crazy lol!

Thank you if you can help me!
xx

Re: Hi thanks so much for your wonderful page but could you help me?
Oh no. Okay so you added the coding after you changed the layout and marked all those questions no?

Which coding did you want to use? This will help me figure out what went wrong.

Right now I'm experiencing LJ failure and can't really look into issues. As soon as I'm able, I'll take a look.

I'm trying to learn how to customize a layout so that I can make a new comm that actually looks half way decent. Your instructions are simple, and I followed them to the tee up until the sixth step. It's there (early on, I know) that I run into a problem. The box for the coding is empty! I marked all three questions "No" and saved the changes, but it's still empty! I'm also using the Autumn Flexible Squares layout as per your advice. Any ideas why I can't see the coding??

Thanks!
Jill aka Josireesanwar on April 13th, 2015 10:35 pm (UTC)
So this is where you put the coding you have found elsewhere or are customizing. It is something you are supposed to fill in.

header and background
I know those are the easy steps, but I have some problems adding my header and background image. I thought I added the direct links of the images, but when I go to my profile, the header and background are just blank.
Jill aka Josireesanwar on May 31st, 2016 07:22 pm (UTC)
Re: header and background
Okay so I appear to be seeing them when I look at your journal. I'm curious if that is a fluke and something in the coding is making it hard for you.

Here is something I would recommend for the header image:

.headerimage {
position: absolute;
width: 1600%;
height: 300px;
margin-top: 0px;
padding: 0px;
background-color: #transparent !important;
background-image: url(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc71/sweetsnowgirl/bright-gold-stars-background-image_zpsohmhibko.jpg);
background-repeat: repeat, no-repeat;
background-position: center bottom;
background-size: auto, cover;
}

in the line that says background-repeat: repeat, no-repeat; change it to
background-repeat: no-repeat;

Then in the line that says background-size: auto, cover; change it to
background-size: cover;

Those added commands followed by a comma are for an additional image on top of your stars image which you currently don't have. This might help with viewing your layout.

I'm going to say the same thing about the background image:
body{
background-color: #cccccc;
background-image: url(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc71/sweetsnowgirl/b2_zpsigokcfni.jpg);
background-repeat: repeat, repeat-x, repeat;
background-attachment: fixed;
background-position: left top, left bottom, left top;
background-size: auto, 500px 82px, auto;

color: #888888;
font-family: "verdana", arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
margin: 0px 0 50px 0;
}

If you want this to be a full background image change these lines:
background-repeat: repeat, repeat-x, repeat;
background-attachment: fixed;
background-position: left top, left bottom, left top;
background-size: auto, 500px 82px, auto;

to

background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-attachment: fixed;
background-position: left top;
background-size: cover;

If you want it to be a repeating image:

background-repeat: repeat;
background-attachment: fixed;
background-position: left top;
background-size: auto;

Does that help you?
